Background and Career.
Christopher qualified as a mechanical engineer with an honours degree in 1966, followed by a career of 25 years in heavy manufacturing. During a family visit to Wookey Hole Caves and the adjacent paper mill in the 1980’s he discovered and became fascinated by the techniques of paper made by hand. Ruscombe Paper Mill, created in 1989, resulted from this visit. It was later transferred to Margaux in South West France in 1995 using the buildings of an old winery. During this period Christopher worked to meet the needs of many artists, museums, libraries, restorers and studios from around the world which included most forms of print making including screen printing.
After the sale of Ruscombe Paper Mill in 2014, Christopher created a screen print studio in Margaux following the purchase of material from a local business which was closing. During his period of initiation into the world of screen print he worked also in collaboration with a local illustrative artist in Bordeaux to produce limited editions of his work. Moving to Devon in 2019 the studio was reassembled at the beginning of 2020. He is also affiliated to the Double Elephant Workshop in Exeter. Following a series of workshops in France it is hoped in due course to re-introduce this activity in his Devon studio.
His screen prints are developed from drawings or photographs together with some abstract work, (some of which record a little nostalgia for his period in France).
The images are generally printed onto St Cuthbert’s 300gm Somerset satin white Paper together with some use of mdf board for specific styles, using both Lascaux and System 3 acrylic inks. Some mono- prints use handmade paper for greater textural impact.
